Digital perception of mining companies in Peru

Analysis of social media conversations about major mining companies.
With the emergence of COVID-19 in the world, companies have been seriously affected in their processes; among them, mining companies, an important source of economic income for countries, which contributes around 15% of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product). This sector was forced to take immediate action and make several strategic changes to face the crisis.
Analysis of the Mining Companies:
When reviewing the panorama prior to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Peru, between January and February 2020, our social media intelligence tool recorded more than 14 thousand conversations on social networks and digital media about the sector. Our sentiment classification algorithm indicates that 53% of conversations were positive, while neutral sentiment registered 21% and finally negative sentiment 26%.
Positive Topics:

Regarding mining projects, social licenses were signed with different mining companies in the country for the execution of their projects. It should be noted that the social license is an essential document for the execution of a project and there must be mutual agreement between the state, population and mining company in order to extract minerals without any objection.

Project paralysis; in January, the state announced that due to the lack of a social license, some mining companies could not execute their projects, one of them was the well-known Tía María project, registering more than 1,600 mentions on January 30 and 31.
